Awhile back I was talking with Paul Gilmartin, who I have become friends with since last fall. I asked him if he could hook me up with some comedians and of course I was asking about the big headliners with HBO shows, etc. . He said to me that he knows about everyone in comedy, but the top people are usually so busy, they most likely will not be available. He later said to me that he knows some great comedians that have not made it big, yet should and probably will with the strength of their talent. I quickly agreed that I would love to talk to those people.  That is how I found the guy who is the topic of this blog.

My mistake was not listening to Mike’s podcast before I recorded with him. I had no idea what kind of talent I was talking to. Mike has teased me, both on his podcast and on the Gentlemen’s Club Podcast about my sound quality of my phone system. He said it sounds like he is talking through a blender. I paid big bucks for the system, but he is right, it sucks. Fellow podcaster Giovanni (podcast here) has given me some great advice for crystal clear recording through a Skype program, which I should have set in place soon.

Mike Schmidt has a podcast called “The 40 Year Old Boy, (click here) and I highly recommend checking it out. He records at his producer’s home, who he often refers to as “recording in a stripper’s kitchen”. The “stripper” is Lili VonSchtupp, a noted burlesque performer. You can hear Lili laughing off mic, and she laughs a lot. I thought that part was going to be annoying at first, and now after listening to all of 2011’s podcasts, I would not have it any other way. I actually think Lili adds to the podcast now.

About Mike: I would imagine if Mike were to take an IQ test, he would surprise even himself. I believe he is one of the best comical storytellers alive. He could go head to head with some of the long gone greats, like Mark Twain and come out a true competitor. I cannot really portray how skilled at the storytelling craft Mike is. This is something you will have to hear for yourself. To know there is no preparation for his shows, makes it even more impressive.

You may hear what often sounds like self-degradation from Mike, but he puts forth brutal honesty and exposes his vulnerabilities. In a world with huge egos in people such as himself, it is very refreshing to listen to him. Oftentimes Mike is introspective, touching on traits that he does not like about himself, and it hits me that I feel the same way he does about certain things. I guess you could say, he gives me therapeutic laughs.

Mike does a monolog podcast that is usually 2 hours long. If I had read this like you are now, I don’t know if I would have even listened for the first time. Let me assure you that if it were 4 hours, I would happily listen to it, at no point have I found it unentertaining.

I cannot talk about Mike without bringing up the fact that he is funny as hell. I must have looked like an idiot, driving on Highway I-80 laughing my ass off.

I think Paul Gilmartin was 100% correct, Mike Schmidt has everything it takes to make it big, and I hope we all get to see that day.

My wish is that you, the reader will sample Mike’s podcast and see for yourself. I suggest finding it on the iTunes store for free automatic downloads. I am thankful I had Mike to listen to and entertain me on my 3,000 mile trek.  His podcast is free, and he has his past three seasons available at reasonable prices.

Mike Siegel

Ed Crasnick

My trip was brought on by some art related business that took me south to Escondido and it was on very short notice. I met with other people and recorded for my Antique Auction Forum podcast and was lucky enough to meet with two great comedians, Ed Crasnick and Mike Siegel.

I found Ed most enjoyable and spent a bit of time with him when the mic was off. He is a great soul and has such a quick wit. I tried to listen to him the whole time, but was distracted by the stunning women walking all around us at Peet’s Coffee outdoor café in Santa Monica. Ed did not seem to notice them at all, and said he lost all emotions in 1968. At least he can focus on work.

When visiting Mike Siegel’s beautiful home, I could tell right away that he had a great presence and understood why he is on the right side of the camera and in a lot of TV shows. He is enthusiastic and a fun person to talk to.

Although it was a quick trip and I was only able to record with two comedians, I did make several connections for upcoming podcasts.

My hopes are to record with James Adomian as former President Bush. Of all Bush impersonators, my opinion is  that he is the best of any. Even though Bush is out of office, I would like to talk to him about what he thinks about the current state of the Union.

There are a lot of great comedians where I live here in the San Francisco area. I am working on recording with a former SNL member and hope that works out.

This podcast is a hobby and it has been a great deal of fun to talk with such entertaining people. I hope you find it fun and I will always be happy to listen to suggestions.

This podcast is nothing more then a work in progress. I am attempting to bring good guests (many great ones lined up), yet struggling to figure out what tact to take. Shall I talk with humorous people who will make you laugh the whole time? Shall I talk to comedians about their pasts and the paths that led them to where they are now? .

I love talking to people about the serious side of things and often get into deep subjects. The last few podcasts have gone in that direction. I was also contacted from a man today that has written a book on society’s take on God and why we think we need one. I told him I think he would be fascinating, but we would need to have some laughs as well.. he said there was plenty of humorous things to talk about in that regards. I am not sure if you as a listener would even care to hear that, yet I am compelled to record with him.

The main reason I started podcasting is, that I love people and find that if you really talk to them, most have a compelling story to tell. As I mentioned above, comedians are smart as well as intriguing and I enjoy talking to them. They have such interesting views of life, events and society.

The name of this podcast is clearly ComicalCast, which I could assume most people would expect to get some laughs out of. I hope that you as a listener can bear with me as I figure out what you really want to hear.. just laughs, or behind the scenes and in to the pasts of guests as well as a few laughs.

It may not be talked about too much, but it is part of the deal. I think comedy can be a byproduct of dealing with pain and a way to cope.

The funniest girl I ever knew in my 20s was as fucked up as they get. Of course I was extremely attracted to her and we had a turbulent relationship that ended in disaster.

My hats off to Paul as he deals openly and honestly with his issues of depression and is attempting to help others. I encourage you to listen to his podcast, even if you do not suffer from a little depression, it is fascinating and he is always good for a laugh. Adam likes to rant on many things and I have to say, he makes sense with his rants. He often points out things that we try to ignore, and all the little things that add up, waste our time and (or) money. One of his complaints for many years is the backup beepers on trucks and heavy equipment. Why can we hear them three miles away when the reason they exist is so dumb people standing behind a truck, hear it and move out of the way. If you are three miles away, why do you have to hear it??? If you are a regular listener to my podcast then you will hear the damn back up beeper on at least two of my shows. Part of me hopes there will be back up beeping when I am recording with Adam so we can go on a joint rant. I will make sure my smoke alarm has a fresh battery.
